Now that you know which companies are hiring you may wonder how to get started? Here are some proposed next steps to get you on your way to success in finding your next remote gig.

1.      Figure out if teleworking will work for you

Do not skip the step. As tempting as it sounds, telecommuting is not as easy as it sounds. Do your research on the topic, discuss your idea with your immediate family, have a plan on how the new job will fit in into your life.

Consider your personality and your communication preferences. If you are an extravert, love people and enjoy visiting with your colleagues working from home may get quite lonely at times. On the other hand, if you are an introvert and love to get things done behind closed doors, remote gig may fit you very well.

2.      Make your resume remote-friendly

Take a closer look at your resume and consider adding more skills that would testify to your employer your readiness to take on a telecommuting opportunity. Companies and hiring managers hiring remote workers will pay special attention to some key skills such as ability to work autonomously, great written, verbal and visual communication skills; advanced knowledge in using collaboration and web conferencing tools, such as Slack, Go To Meeting, Zoom, Skype Business, DropBox, Share Point, etc.

Your job is to showcase skills, aptitude, and experience of an established teleworking professional who is ready to take on their next opportunity and add value to the team.

3.      Research companies above, narrow to top 5

One of the mistakes I made in my early career years is I failed to identify my own needs and special powers early. Be clear about what makes you special, comparing to millions of other candidates in the job market. Seek companies that fit your values, your needs, and where you could spread your wings and truly blossom with your natural talents.

Select no more than 5 top companies that you absolutely would love to work for and make it your job to learn everything there is to know about them. The shorter your list, the more targeted your job search is, and the more you know about your employer, the faster you will get noticed and get hired. In the case of the job search, less is more. A smaller number of companies brings your focus and forces you to be very intentional with your time, resources, and efforts.

4.      Apply directly on the company`s web site

The last step is you will need to either apply on the company`s web site or apply via a job board. I had better luck with direct applications. I believe that using the company`s web site communicates the intentionality and seriousness of your application.

Make sure to collect all the documentation your employer requires, such as educational transcripts, reference letters, cover letter, and so on. Keep in mind that incomplete applications usually discarded, so you want you to take your time and provide everything the employer asked.

Job search, including remote job search, could be intimidating, confusing, and downright exhausting. Last fall I started that journey myself, and it was not easy. Take your time, invest the time an effort in your research, and follow the steps we outlined above to get started on your remote job hunt.

Please keep in mind, the link for each company listed above will lead you to FlexJobs company summary, not to the job board itself. If you choose not to become a FlexJobs member, you always can use Google Search and add “careers” to the company`s name to find the latest opening for each employer.
